In 1848 the engineer Robert Stephenson extended the railway from Chester to Holyhead along the North Wales coast, taking it through the historic town of Conwy.

The photograph above shows how the line was taken through a tunnel underneath the town walls, the subsidence caused by the construction led to a large crack forming in one of the towers as can be seen. Work to underpin the tower was carried out in 1963.
